Designing with recovery in mind

A draft framework for asking better questions about recovery objectives, dependencies, and validation.

Begin with the question

Before selecting a recovery mechanism, establish what needs to be recovered and why. This editorial outline proposes a way to organize that conversation; it is not a tested recovery plan.

Make objectives explicit

A useful review separates acceptable data loss from acceptable service interruption. Recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO) need business context and a clearly defined service boundary.

Map dependencies

  • Identify the services a workload depends on.
  • Consider identity, name resolution, storage, and network dependencies.
  • Describe the order in which services would need to return.

Plan for evidence

A design review should ask what a recovery exercise would demonstrate, what evidence would be retained, and how gaps would be tracked. A recovery claim needs validation within its actual operating context.
